City Says Which Structures Don’t Need Demo Permits

Chris Parker / February 13, 2025

LADBS announced this week which structures won’t need a demolition permit prior to demolition in an attempt to streamline the rebuild process by allowing many structures to be removed without permits.

A demo permit is not needed when:

  1. The applicant notifies LADBS prior to demolition.
  2. The damaged building footprint or pad slope is not steeper than 1:5 (20% slope)
  3. If foundations are removed, the excavated areas do not exceed 3 feet in depth and lateral support of adjacent structures or public right of way is maintained.

A demo permit will be required if the building footprint or pad is steeper than 20% and/or if there are deep foundations, piles, grade beams, stepped footings and/or retaining walls.
